Men's Swim & Dive

Rogic, Haynes Lead `Runners Against UNLV

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – In the last competition of 2018 for the CSU Bakersfield swimming and diving teams, sophomore Kris Rogic won four events and junior Jayssie Haynes won two and finished second in another as UNLV defeated both the men's and women's teams on Wednesday.

The men's dual came down to the 16th and final event at the John S. Hillman Memorial Aquatic Center.  With the Rebels leading by seven heading into the 400-yard freestyle relay, UNLV outouched the `Runners to claim the victory 156-144.  The CSUB women were defeated 206-94.

"We knew it was going to be an uphill battle for the women, but our women come to every single meet wanting to win, whether it is a battle or a shoe-in," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen.  "Our men need to start having that mentality.  Every girl walks on the step wanting to win whatever the circumstances are.  If we had every guy do that we would've won today.  Kris (Rogic), Justice (Kramer) and Richie (Campbell) showed a lot of heart today, but our distance group needs to race much tougher."

Rogic powered the men's upset bid with victories in the 100 backstroke (50.38), 200 back (1:50.80) and 200 individual medley (1:53.72).  The sophomore also joined forces with Jake Chir, Loren Gillilan and Richie Campbell to win the 200 medley relay (1:32.31).

Chir added a first-place finish of his own in the 100 breaststroke (57.49), while Campbell and Noah Hickman went 1-2 in the 50 free, finishing in 21.02 and 21.40, respectively.  Gillilan touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly (48.77) and added second-place finishes in the 200 free (1:40.98) and 100 free (46.33).

Justice Kramer took second in the 200 fly (1:53.39) with Greg Lee adding a runner-up in the 200 breast (2:06.33) and Nate Cummins finishing second in 1-meter diving (263.25).

Haynes' victories came in the 100 breast (1:06.14) and 200 breast (2:21.36).  The junior also added a runner-up finish in the 200 IM (2:07.35).  CSUB picked up some big points as Sabrina Zavala and Lucy Peltz went 2-3 in the 1,000 free.  Zavala finished the longest event of the day in 10:32.70, while Peltz checked in at 10:38.47.

Autumn D'Arcy continued her incredible freshman campaign, winning the 100 fly (55.45) and finishing second in the 200 free (1:54.86).  Maddie Cosgrove also finished second in the 200 fly (2:07.55).

The men's team will be back in action at UC San Diego on January 5, while the women's team will continue their string of home duals on January 2 when they host San Jose State at 10:30 a.m.
