Senior Day Clash On Tap For CSUB Volleyball

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Senior Day has arrived for CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team. In what is always a bittersweet moment, a pair of Roadrunners will participate in their last regular-season games inside the Icardo Center. CSUB is preparing to host Grand Canyon on Saturday, Nov. 10, with seniors Mattison DeGarmo and Briannah Mariner preparing to cement their `Runner legacies.

"The game against GCU is a big match for us not only for conference standings," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball, "but it is the last regular-season game our two seniors play on the blue court. We would love to get the support of the community as we say goodbye to two amazing student-athletes."

Fortunately, Saturday's Western Athletic Conference matchup with GCU may not be the last on the blue hardwood of the Kern Schools Court for CSUB's seniors. The `Runners have three matches left to play before postseason and only need one more win to guarantee themselves a spot in the WAC Volleyball Tournament, which will be played in Bakersfield this year.

Standing in the way of a clinched postseason spot for CSUB are the Lopes of GCU (11-13, 4-8 WAC). When the `Runners traveled to Phoenix in October, the Lopes pushed their visitors to the brink. CSUB was able to close out a 3-2 road victory with a 15-12 win in the final set.

GCU will come to Bakersfield after splitting a pair of WAC home matches last week. The Lopes fell to UT Rio Grande Valley in straight sets before closing out the weekend with a sweep over a hot squad in California Baptist. Much like CSUB, GCU has a well-balanced offense that can find production from several student-athletes. Freshman Kayla Matthews leads the Lopes' attack with 2.55 kills per set this season.

Melo and the `Runners will look to their two seniors to continue leading the way. Mariner, a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, has paced CSUB all season with 2.38 kills per set. DeGarmo, who hails from Castle Rock, Colo., is third on the team with 2.03 kills per set and leads all `Runners with a .274 hitting percentage. Bakersfield will need both women to play well in the final stretches of the season.

On Saturday, the Senior Day Ceremony will start at 1 p.m., just a few minutes before first serve. Fans interested in attending the match can look into tickets ahead of time here, or buy them at the box office on game day. Those who cannot make it out to the Icardo Center can follow along via WatchESPN.
