Women's Basketball Wins 56-48 Over Gauchos

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team picked up their second straight victory on Friday night with a 56-48 decision over future Big West Conference foe UC Santa Barbara. The win marks the first 2-0 start since 2014-15.

Bakersfield opened the contest aggressive on the defensive end, tallying three steals through the first 10 minutes, but were unable to get an offensive flow going. The first field goal made came from JJ Johnson with 7:55 left in the first quarter. Roadrunners would go on a 6-0 run into the first timeout to take a 7-2 lead before closing out the period with a 12-8 edge.

CSUB went on a 13-0 run to start the second quarter, forcing a timeout from the Gauchos with 6:15 left in the period. The `Runners kept the pressure on UCSB coming out of the timeout limiting the home team to just one field goal at the buzzer from CoCo Miller and extending their lead to 32-14 at the half.

Santa Barbara was able to cut the deficit to 12 points from a 10-4 run to start the third quarter. The Gauchos outscored the Roadrunners 13-9 but still trailed 27-41 heading into the final period of the contest.

Free throws allowed UC Santa Barbara to linger in the game and eventually cut the Roadrunner lead to just five with 3:02 left to play. Malayasia McHenry finished in the paint with 1:00 left to play in regulation to give the Bakersfield a four-point lead. An offensive foul drawn by McHenry on the other end with 31.8 seconds set up the double bonus free throws for Alexxus Gilbert to extend the lead. Roadrunners would add two more for the final 56-48 score.

Bakersfield finished the game with three players in double-figures and had the advantage in steals (6-5), assists (11-7), and rebounds (46-34). Gilbert had a game-high 15 points while Johnson and McHenry added 13 and 10, respective. McHenry recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 rebounds.
