Bakersfield Opens Season At Home With Wright State

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team will open the 2018-19 regular season at home on Tuesday, Nov. 6 when the Roadrunners welcome Wright State University to Icardo Center.

This will be the first meeting between both programs in the all-time series.

When asked what to expect from the Raiders, head coach Greg McCall replied, "Wright State is a very good team that went to the WNIT last year. Merriweather primarily runs a dribble-drive offense. Most, if not all of their shots are a three or in the key. She gives them the green light to let them fly early in the shot clock."

Bakersfield will look to build off last year's 18-14, 10-4 WAC season that featured a run at both the Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament finals title. The Roadrunners fell short in both feats before their season ended in the first round of the WBI.

CSUB boasts 10 returnees and six newcomers, including preseason All-WAC honorees Alexxus Gilbert, JJ Johnson, and Vanessa Austin. With this trio back to lead a veteran group, head coach Greg McCall should be pleased with the dynamics of his team heading into a new season.

"We have got to do a good job of being discipline in our man defensive principles," explained McCall. "I know we can run the fastbreak or slow it down and work the ball inside out but it's going to come down to who is able to play good one-on-one defense for 40 minutes.

The women's basketball team will tipoff with the Raiders at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night.

Tuesday night will feature the first color out game of the year. Fans are encouraged to support women's basketball at their season opener by wearing blue with the team.
