Women’s Basketball Hosts Food Bank Frenzy On Tuesday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After a two-game road stint and five days without competition, the CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team will return home Tuesday, Nov. 20 when the Roadrunners welcome Whittier College to Icardo Center for a 7 p.m. matchup on the Kern Schools Court.

This will be the first time Bakersfield has faced the Poets, a small Division III school in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The contest will be recorded as an exhibition game for Whittier and will not affect their overall record.

When asked how to keep his team's intensity and playing level up for 40 minutes against a non-Division I opponent, head coach Greg McCall replied, "We want to win. No matter who we're matched up against we're going to go out there and continue to do the things that have helped us be successful - energy, effort, and communication."

Whittier College has tallied three wins at home to start the 2018-19 season undefeated. The Poets defeated Linfield 58-50 in their season opener on Monday, Nov. 12 before giving Pacific (Ore.) and Colorado College their first losses on the year this past weekend.

"Whittier is a smart, well-coached team that's going to come here playing to win," explained McCall. "We're similar teams if you're looking at playing styles by position, we just have the height advantage in matchups."

Bakersfield is coming off a 47-53 loss at UTEP after opening the season with its first 2-0 start since 2014-15 with wins over Wright State and UC Santa Barbara. The Roadrunners are led by a trio of players averaging double figures. Alexxus Gilbert leads the pack with 14.0 ppg, JJ Johnson averages 11.0 ppg while Malayasia McHenry rounds out the senior class with 10.5 ppg and 11.3 rpg.

"We're looking for and relying on those three seniors (Gilbert, Johnson, and McHenry) to be consistent night after night," added McCall. "Then when others like Vanessa Austin, Kate Tokuhara, Dalis Jones, and Nia Johnson step up offensively for us its a bonus."

FAN ENGAGEMENT
Tuesday night will feature Food Bank Frenzy Night. Fans are encouraged to bring canned food to the game in exchange for a $3 ticket voucher. All of the canned food will be donated to the CSUB Food Pantry, an organization that helps provide meals to students on campus.
