CSUB Takes Three Seconds at Roadrunner Open

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield wrestlers Alex Hernandez-Figueroa, Sean Nickell and Dominic Ducharme all placed second to lead the way for the `Runners at the eighth annual Roadrunner Open on Sunday at the Icardo Center.

Wrestling at 125 pounds, Hernandez-Figueroa was dominant in his first two matches of the day, winning both by technical fall.  He won 17-0 over Fresno State's Joe Delgado and followed it up with a 15-0 shutout over California Baptist's Cyril Maravilla.  The redshirt sophomore squeaked by Brandon Vu of San Francisco State 4-3 in the semifinals to reach the title.  In the final match, he met up with North Dakota State's Brent Fleetwood.  Fleetwood was leading 10-1 in the championship, before Hernandez-Figueroa suffered a knee injury and could not continue. 

It was a match of nationally-ranked wrestlers in the title at 133 pounds.  CSUB's Nickell, ranked 19th in the nation by FloWrestling and NDSU's Cameron Sykora, ranked 16th squared off in one of the more anticipated bouts of the day.  Unfortunately, it was Sykora who controlled the match, leading the entire way and defeating Nickell by major decision 12-1.  The redshirt senior reached the title match with a 17-1 technical fall of Simpson University's Sergio Montoya to begin the day, and scored back-to-back 9-1 major decisions over Menlo College's Ian Morken and San Francisco State's Jordan Gurrola. 

Ducharme took the silver at 184 pounds after suffering an 8-5 loss to Menlo's Anthony Orozco in the title match.  The redshirt sophomore took a narrow 3-2 lead on a reversal after starting the second period on bottom, but Orozco rattled off the next six points to take an 8-2 advantage.  Ducharme escaped Orozco's control late in the third period and received a penalty point, but time ran out on the comeback attempt.  To start the day, Ducharme earned a 12-2 major decision over Fresno State's Angel Solis and needed just 15 seconds to pin Kyle Matthews who was wrestling unattached.  In the semifinals, he snuck past Stanford's Colbey Harlan 2-1. 

Redshirt junior Jacob Thalin went 5-1 on the day to take third place at 165 pounds.  In the opening round, he shutout Fresno State's Adam Kemp 15-0 to win by technical fall, before suffering a 16-3 defeat at the hands of Stanford's Shane Griffith, the eventual champion.  In the consolation bracket, he beat fellow Roadrunner Albert Urias 9-3 and needed overtime to earn a 4-1 victory over Menlo's Alejandro Garcia.  He then won by forfeit to advance to the third-place match, which he won 5-0 over Stanford's Brandon Dallavia. 

CSUB's Carlos Herrera and Reed South both placed fifth at 141 and 174 pounds, respectively.  Herrera went 3-2 on the day and reached the semifinals in the championship bracket, before falling in two consecutive matches.  South also had three victories on the day, two of which came by tech fall.  Josh Loomer finished sixth at 197 pounds after going 4-3.    

The Roadrunners will have next weekend off before returning to the mat for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on November 30 and December 1.
