`Runners Set To Face CBU, Seattle U

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The normal weekend schedule is a little wonky this week as CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team is preparing to play a pair of Western Athletic Conference matches on Saturday and Monday. With a seven-match win streak and a perfect record in league play on the line, the Roadrunners will ignore the odd schedule and focus on earning victories over California Baptist and Seattle U.

"We have a very tough weekend ahead of us," said Giovana Melo, Director of Volleyball at CSUB. "It is our first game on the road against California Baptist and they are playing very well. Seattle U is also having a great season. The games will happen in a different order than we are used to as we play on Saturday and Monday, but we are ready to go to battle."

CBU (11-5, 2-2 WAC) will welcome the `Runners to Riverside, Calif. on Saturday, Oct. 6. California Baptist, the newest member of the WAC, and Bakersfield will face off for the fifth time in the series history, but for the first time since 1997. The `Runners are 4-0 all-time against the Lancers, but the first matchup in more than 20 years and the first time both are playing at the same level (NCAA Division I) will make for an intriguing story.

A more familiar foe, Seattle U (8-8, 1-2 WAC) will travel to Bakersfield on Monday, Oct. 8, for the 26th meeting in the two programs' histories. The Redhawks have always put up a good fight against the `Runners, but CSUB has won 14 of the last 15 matchups. Seattle U has a well-balanced offense as six Redhawks average 1.8 kills per set or more, so CSUB will have to be prepared to defend all parts of the court.

CSUB (10-6, 3-0 WAC) sits atop the WAC standings, tied with Kansas City as the only two undefeated teams thus far. The `Runners enjoyed big news this week when the first NCAA RPI of the year was released. Bakersfield found itself ranked 69th, the highest since the program moved to Division I in 2007.

Saturday's match in Riverside will begin at 1 p.m. On Monday, the `Runners will have first serve against Seattle U at 7 p.m. in the Icardo Center. For links to tickets, live streams, and live stats, visit the CSUB volleyball schedule page.
