Women’s Soccer Return To WAC Tournament

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team (No. 6 seed) will return to the Western Athletic Conference Tournament after a one-year hiatus from postseason play. The Roadrunners kick off the quarterfinals round in Orem, Utah on Wednesday with the first match of the day against No. 3 seed University of Texas Rio Grande Valley at Noon MT.

"We are excited to be back in the tournament this year," said head coach Sebastian Vecchio. "We feel that we are playing our best soccer yet. UTRGV will present a lot of challenges for us, but we feel confident going into this game."

CSUB is riding a three-game unbeaten streak into the WAC Tournament and finished 3-4-1 in league action. The Roadrunners got an extra boost of energy this morning after conference officials announced regular season major award winners and senior captain Aminah Settles had been named first team All-WAC for the third time in her career.

Bakersfield is now 3-2-0 all-time against UTRGV after a tough loss at home earlier this season. CSUB fell to the Vaqueros 3-1 at Main Soccer Field on Oct 7. The Roadrunners were without starting goalkeeper Jordan Bertram and seniors Mel Cea and Tori VandeHoef had limited minutes in the contest. The last time the women's team picked up a postseason win was Nov. 5, 2015 in the WAC quarterfinals against New Mexico State.

"It is good to be playing postseason," added Vecchio. "November soccer is a lot of fun!"

Should the CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team advance, the squad will face Seattle U again in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 2. The Redhawks are undefeated in the all-time series (20-0-0) after a 4-3 decision on Oct. 5. The Roadrunners, in their first of three contests without Bertram, dug themselves into a 2-0 deficit in the first half vs. SU but scored three goals in the second half to nearly force an extra period.

Wednesday's quarterfinals clash will be live streamed on the WAC Digital Network. For more information, visit the Tournament Central page at wacsports.com, here.
