`Runners To Host UMKC & Chicago State This Week

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Roadrunner volleyball has returned home as CSU Bakersfield is preparing to host a pair of Western Athletic Conference matches this week. CSUB will enjoy the comforts of the Icardo Center again and attempt to defend the Kern Schools Court, where the `Runners have an 8-1 record this season, against Kansas City and Chicago State.

"We are excited to be playing at home again on a regular two-game week," said Giovana Melo, Director of Volleyball at CSUB. "We have been traveling a lot, so, being back in front of our home crowd will be good for us."

The `Runners will open the week with a Thursday night matchup against Kansas City (15-8, 6-3 WAC). UMKC will come to Bakersfield with a 7-3 record over its last 10 matches. In their lone match last week, the Roos swept Grand Canyon at home. UMKC has a trio of hitters that represent a big threat in junior Alicia Harrington, senior Tyrecia Lukes, and freshman Melanie Brecka.

On Saturday, CSUB will play host to Chicago State (8-17, 2-7 WAC). The Cougars have lost their last three matches and eight of their last 10 contests, but CSU is not a team to be overlooked. Chicago State has already surprised UMKC and Utah Valley with victories this season. Senior outside hitter Lauryn Dela Cruz ranks fourth in the WAC with 3.63 kills per set and will be a challenge for the `Runner defense.

Thursday's match between the `Runners and Roos is set for a 7 p.m. first serve. CSUB will be wearing pink as part of their Dig Pink Night to support breast cancer awareness. On Saturday, the match against Chicago State will begin at 1 p.m. and will feature CSUB's Halloween Party. Candy will be passed out and the fan wearing the best costume will win tickets to Safe Halloween.
