CSUB To Begin Conference Play At Home Against Utah Valley

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield's women's basketball team will begin conference play the start of the new year after two tough games ending in a lost last weekend. The Roadrunners will look to bounce back from those games starting at home playing against Utah Valley.

"I am super excited about conference play and this team is ready," said Greg McCall head coach of CSUB women's basketball. "This is the time of year that you kind of have a second season. In conference play, you have to play on whole another level."

Bakersfield will welcome their first conference opponent of the season Utah Valley with a current record of 6-9. As a team, Utah is averaging 58.6 points and 30.7 rebounds per game. Currently, the Wolverines have a .751% free throw average and are averaging 10.1 steals per game. The team is led by seniors Taylor Christensen who tallies 16.4 points per game, 4.8 rebounds per game and has 24 assists while Mariah Seals holds 12.9 points per game and has 59 assists.

Coach McCall went on to comment about the well-known opponents, the Wolverines, "Utah Valley is a zone team, they are going to zone us. They live and die by their zone defense, you have to be prepared and attack it. Right now, we are getting prepared for it"

Despite the `Runners two loses this weekend they are still holding their opponents defensively to 56.1 points per game and are currently ranked #33 in the nation in scoring defense and #78 with 18.86 turnovers forced. CSUB is hoping their defense and offense prevails to get off to a great start in the Western Athletic Conference.

CSUB will play at the Icardo Center on Saturday, Jan. 6 for a scheduled tip-off at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available for fans who cannot make the game. The links can be found on the women's basketball schedule page.
