`Runners Head Out to Saint Mary's Tournament for the Weekend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's women's soccer team will travel to Moraga, Calif. for the Saint Mary's Tournament this weekend. The Roadrunners will play 1^st in the tournament, host, Saint Mary's on Friday, Sept. 8. Then will be back on Sunday, Sept. 10 at Saint Mary's Stadium to play Grambling State.

"It's another great challenge for our team and a big test on the road, said Gary Cureen, Head Coach of the `Runners. "We have made steady growth so far, both on and off the field. Every day our culture is growing and our habits are strengthening on the practice field. The next step for our program is to keep using this momentum to improve performances in games against quality opposition. Road trips are the ultimate psychological test of a college team and we are working hard to make sure that our focus and preparation sets us up for success this weekend at St. Mary's."

Host Saint Mary's will welcome CSUB with a 2-3 record after last Friday's home game against Cal State Fullerton. The Gaels fell short to the undefeated Titans 3-0. Sophomore Sarah Sawatzky recorded 5 saves against Fullerton. Freshman mid-fielder Vanessa Gaitan is tied for most goals (2), scoring her 1st and 2nd career goal in her second appearance as a Gael. Currently, the Gaels have won 1 out of 3 home games.

Grambling State will play the `Runners with a 1-3 record, falling short in their last three games, two being at home. Goalkeeper Jordan Woodward has a total of 9 saves for the start of the Tiger's 2017 season and has earned Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Goalkeeper of the Week honors last week.

Friday's match against Saint Mary is set for a 1 p.m. kick off and can be watched live via the West Coast Conference, THEW.TV. Sunday's match in the tournament is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
