`Runners Will Begin WAC Run For 2017 Season

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The time has come for CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team to officially begin their Western Athletic Conference run. The Roadrunners will start on the road this weekend for a pair of league matches. Thursday, Sept. 21 the Roadrunners will open up in the windy city to take on Chicago State and Saturday, Sept. 23 they will head to Kansas City to match up with UMKC.   
 
"We are excited to start WAC play. It is always a fun time of the year for us," said Giovana Melo, Director of Volleyball at CSUB. "We just want to go compete in conference and see where we stand."
 
Thursday's match up will begin with much improved Chicago State, who now leads the WAC in non-conference game. The Cougars will begin their conference game with a record of 9-6, vastly improving from last season of 3-26 with eight returners and eight newcomers. Leading for the team and selected WAC player of the week twice, is junior transfer Lauryn Dela Cruz with 4.71 kills per set and 3.76 digs per set. CSUB is currently 11-0 against Chicago State and hopes to make it 12 this weekend.
 
To wrap up the road games for the weekend the `Runners will take on UMKC in Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday. The kangaroos will open their conference with a record of 4-9 playing their first conference game on Thursday against Grand Canyon. The team is led by sophomore returner Alicia Harrington with 3.14 kills per set and 3.25 digs per set.
 
The first league match on Thursday is scheduled for a 7 p.m (CT) start time at Swinney Recreation Center. Saturday's game will have an earlier start time of 1 p.m (CT) at the Jacoby D. Dickens Center. `Runner fans will be able to watch live stream of both league matches via WAC Digital Network.
