Mustangs Hold Off `Runners In Home Opener

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's opportunities to tie its match against Cal Poly on Friday night came up just short as the Roadrunners dropped a hard-fought, 1-0 thriller at the Main Soccer Field. The `Runners put constant pressure on the Mustangs, but Cal Poly held off each attack and earned the road victory.

Cal Poly created a corner kick in the 26th minute that led to the game's first goal. Ashley Kirchick played the ball short to Megan Abutin, who shimmied past a CSUB defender and found Chelsea Barry at the top of the box. The junior defender blasted a shot to the bottom left corner that ricocheted off of the post and into the goal for a 1-0 Mustang lead.

The final five minutes of the first half provided two close attempts on goal by CSUB's Claire Nelson, but both shots by the attacking midfielder were just off the mark. The `Runners went into the break trailing 1-0 with an exciting 45 minutes to come.

The second half featured a much faster pace in which the `Runners controlled the ball a majority of the time. CSUB's closest look at an equalizer came at 67:30 when freshman Eszter Toth received the ball 15 yards out. Her blast to the left side went one foot wide as the `Runners continued to hunt for their first goal.

With 10 seconds remaining in the game, CSUB earned a corner kick and hurried to put the ball in the box for one final chance. Cal Poly's keeper, Sophia Brown, punched the ball away and time expired as the Mustangs held on for the thrilling, 1-0 victory.

CSUB's sophomore keeper Jordan Bertram and the `Runner defense did well to keep Cal Poly off the board after the one goal. Bertram made five saves on the night while Bakersfield's backline held strong against the Mustangs.

The `Runners (1-2-0) will return to Texas on Friday, Aug. 25, to face UTEP. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. (MT) start in El Paso. Live stats will be available at this link.
