BAKERSFIELD, Calif.  – The Roadrunner women's swimming and diving team came up just short in its annual New Year's Eve dual on Sunday morning. CSU Bakersfield was missing a pair of key `Runners due to injury and suffered a 155-143 loss at the hands of San José State at the Hillman Aquatics Center.

"In a meet that is this close to Christmas break, you could tell who did their job over break and who didn't," said Chris Hansen, CSUB's Director of Swimming. "Jayssie Haynes and Maddie Cosgrove are dependable and did great. Isabella Magalong had a very good day, too. It's fun to see some of the freshmen step up."

Haynes, a sophomore, had the highlight of the day for the `Runners, winning the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:23.05. Despite swimming an off event, Haynes posted the fourth-fastest time in CSUB history and now has a spot on CSUB's Top 5 all-time lists in five different events. The native of San Jose, Calif. went on to win the 200 breast (2:24.13) by four seconds and finished third in the 200 IM (2:11.90).

A fellow sophomore, Cosgrove won the 200 fly (2:07.18) with a five-second gap between her and the next fastest swimmer. The native of San Diego, Calif. went on to placed second in the 100 free (53.45) and finished fourth in the 100 fly (59.76).

In the 200 IM, Magalong took a victory in 2:10.46, her best time of the dual season. The freshman also won the 100 breast with a season-best time of 1:07.44 and placed second in the 100 fly (58.34).

On the diving boards, junior Hannah Chernabaeff started modestly with a mark of 234.75 on the 3-meter springboard to finish fourth. The Bakersfield native picked it up on the 1-meter, posting a season-best score of 246.07 to earn the win over SJSU.

The `Runners have wrapped up 2017 with a dual record of 4-5 and will get back to work on Jan. 6 with a tri meet against UC San Diego and Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, Calif.
