Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

CSUB Defeats Omaha, 52-43

BAKERSFIELD, Calif – CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team came out knowing Omaha (7-4) was going to be a tough team. However, the Roadrunners offense got back on track and defensively dominated the Mavericks in the first half. CSUB improved its record 5-6 defeating Omaha 52-43.

"Great win, very proud of these young ladies," said Greg McCall head coach of CSUB women's basketball team.  "We came out and scored 19 points in the first quarter and set the tone right away. Overall, I am very pleased what we did, we've continued to get better but you can tell we still have a long way to go. It's a work in progress."

The `Runners came out firing shots and took a commanding lead 12-2 at the first media timeout and then went on a 7-2 run through the first period to take the lead, 19-4. However, the `Runners were not done there and continued to build their lead in the second quarter, 7-6 and ended the half 26-10. Defensively, CSUB was able to hold off the Mavericks to 17.4% field goals. Senior Aja Williams and junior Alexxus Gilbert led the first half with 7 points and 2 assists each.

The third period opened up slow for both teams as the first point scored came from the Mavericks after four and half minutes. Bakersfield made its first field goal from redshirt Jazmine Johnson's 3-pointer and the `Runners were able to keep their lead despite the Mavericks outscoring CSUB 15-13 in the third period.

Into the fourth and Omaha started closing in on the `Runners making it a five point game, 46-41 with only 1:15 minutes left in the game. Two points from Williams and two more from Gilbert kept Bakersfield in solid shape to ultimately secure CSUB another home victory.

Williams led the Roadrunners shooting 50 % from the field with 16 points, 6 rebounds,3 assists, 2 steals. Gilbert finished the night with 11 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds while Johnson scored 8 points and had 3 assists. As a team, Bakersfield shot 90% of its free-throws and forced 22 turnovers against Omaha.

The `Runners will head back on the road before returning home for a New Years Eve game. Wednesday, Dec. 20 CSUB will face off against Boise State with a tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. (MT). `Runner fans can follow live stats by finding the link on the women's basketball schedule page.
