`Runners Dominant D Leads To Victory Over Whittier

Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team was able to get back on the winning track with a 72-35 victory behind a dominating defensive performance that saw the `Runners cause Whittier College to turn the ball over 28 times.  The 28 turnovers the `Runners forced is a season high.  CSUB would also get great scoring balance and would have six players score eight or more points.

Roadrunner Alexxus Gilbert hit a step back three and CSUB took an early 13-6 lead into the first media timeout.  The `Runners would extend their lead to eleven at the end of the first quarter and CSUB had a 20-9 lead.  Gilbert led all scorers with six points after the first ten minutes.

The `Runners continued to build their lead in the second quarter and this is where CSUB really took complete control of the game.  The `Runners would outscore the Poets 15-4 in the second quarter to take a commanding 35-13 lead at the half.  Sophomore guard Dalis Jones led all scorers with nine points at the break, along with two rebounds and two steals in just nine minutes of court time.  The `Runners caused Whittier College to turn the ball over 19 times in the first half and held the Poets to 29% shooting from the field in the first half.

CSUB would extend their lead to 31 and would take a 56-25 lead into the fourth quarter.  Senior Aja Williams would score six points in the third quarter and would lead all scorers with 12 points after three quarters.  Junior Jerice Fears filled the stat sheet through three quarters.  Fears had four points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists.

CSUB Head Coach Greg McCall said, "I thought we did a great job in the second half executing.  Our defensive presence was very good as well."

The `Runners would outscore Whittier 16-10 in the fourth quarter to get their fourth win of the season.  Williams would be the leading scorer in the game with 12 points, Jones finished with 11 and Kate Tokuhara was 3-8 from three point range and finished with nine points and three rebounds.

CSUB will be back in action at the Icardo Center on Monday, Dec. 18 against Omaha with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. in Bakersfield.
