`Runners WAC Championship Ring Ceremony Is Friday At Home Opener

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team will open their 2017-18 season with a home game against Whittier College on Friday, Nov. 10 and then travel to Georgia Southern for their first road game on Monday, Nov. 3.

Besides celebrating the kickoff of the regular season, the `Runners will have another celebration at the Icardo Center on Friday night.  CSUB will have a ring ceremony to celebrate their 2016-17 Western Athletic Conference regular season championship.

Whittier went 11-13 last season and Mark Jensen was named Interim Head Men's Basketball Coach on Apr. 17, 2017.  But there will be little transition, as Jensen has been an assistant at Whittier since 2007.

`Runners Head Coach Rod Barnes added to an already deep roster, including freshman guard Jarkel Joiner from Oxford, MS.  Joiner finished fourth in the country in scoring his senior year at Oxford High School and was named the 2017 Mississippi Player of the Year.

The `Runners will travel to Statesboro, Ga. for the game against Georgia Southern. The Eagles went 18-15 last season and played in the College Basketball Invitational where their season ended with a first-round loss to the WAC's Utah Valley.

When Coach Barnes as asked what his team could get accomplished before the opening tip of the regular season, he said, "we need to shore up our rebounding and we can shoot the ball better.  Biola got a lot of second chance opportunities.  They didn't score a lot of second chance points, but they did get opportunities."
