`Runners Rally Falls Just Short In Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, AK – CSU Bakersfield's Damiyne Durham's deep turnaround three pointer at the buzzer fell just short and Central Michigan would survive a late `Runners rally to win the last GCI Great Alaska Shootout 75-72.

A third consecutive slow start for CSUB and their opponent at the GCI Great Alaska Shootout and this time at the first media timeout between Central Michigan and the `Runners, the Chippewas led 4-3 after 4:01.  Durham came in off the bench four minutes into the game and in his first three and half minutes of play, the junior had scored seven points to help the `Runners take a 16-12 lead.  Durham continued to stay hot. At the third media timeout, 7:03 remaining in the half, Durham had 13 points on 5-6 shooting, including 3-4 from three point range and the `Runners led 27-23.

Central Michigan would go on a quick 8-0 run before the last media timeout of the first half to retake the lead, 32-30.  The Chippewas would finish the first half on a 15-6 run and would go to the break with a 39-36 lead over the `Runners.

CSUB was led by Durham's 13 points and junior Rickey Holden's 12 at the half.  Durham and Holden were a combined 10-14 from the field and the rest of the `Runners were 4-13 from the field.  Senior Brent Wrapp led all players with seven assists.  Central Michigan shot 50% from the field in the half, the `Runners shot 52% and both teams were 5-13 from three point range.

Central Michigan would open the second half on a tear and extend their lead to 10, 53-43, at the first media timeout.  With 13:16 remaining Durham would hit his fourth three pointer of the game and that would cause Central Michigan to call timeout and the Chippewas lead was cut to 55-50.

Central Michigan would take a 67-62 lead into the third media timeout.  Holden would drain a deep three out of the timeout and the Chippewas lead was cut to two.  The final media timeout came with 3:57 remaining and the `Runners trailed 69-65.  Durham would drain another three, his sixth of the game, with 3:32 remaining and the `Runners led 70-69.

The Chippewas would regain the lead and take a 74-72 lead.  With 22 seconds remaining, Central Michigan would be fouled and would make one of two to take a three point lead.  The `Runners would come the other way and Justin Davis's three with ten seconds left, from the same spot the freshman hit the winner from the night before, went in and out and CMU would get the rebound and survive.

Both teams were absolutely scorching from the field the entire evening.  Central Michigan shot 52% from the field and the `Runners shot 50%.  Both teams made 10 threes on the night, but the big difference came in the disparity at the free throw line.  CMU attempted 26 free throws and made 17.  The `Runners attempted nine and made eight.  NINE.  The Chippewas shot 17 more free throws.  SEVENTEEN.

Durham scored 24 points in what was easily his and maybe the team's best individual performance of the season.  The junior shot 9-16 from the field and 6-12 from three point range.  Holden scored 15 points, with five assists and three rebounds.  Davis chipped in with 13 points and four rebounds.  Brent Wrapp finished with nine assists and the senior had 26 assists for the tournament.  Wrapp's 26 assists is the sixth most all time at the Great Alaska Shootout.

The `Runners, now 4-3 on the year, will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at UCLA with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.  The game will be broadcast on the PAC-12 Network.
