Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

`Runners Hold Off The Titans For Another Home Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's women's basketball team held on to its lead through all four periods in Wednesday night's home game and defensively took control to force Cal State Fullerton to only make 26% of their field goals. The Roadrunners won their second game at home, 55-43.

"It was really good defensive to hold a team to 43 points," said Greg McCall, Head Coach of CSUB's women's basketball team. "The third quarter was a huge struggle for us coming out but we held them to five points that quarter. It was really good to see our defense hold them and take care of business on that side."

CSUB came right out prepared for battle and used their defense to keep the Titans offense from getting ahead. The `Runners went 7-for-13 from the field in the opening period and led by four, 16-12. Senior Aja Williams led Bakersfield with six points while redshirt senior Jazmyne Bartee had an impressive two blocks.

Bakersfield matched its offensive effort in the second period and extended its lead to 29-23. Bartee led the `Runners with a fierce half scoring four points with five rebounds and three blocks.

The second half got off to a slow start for both sides but the `Runners eventually found their fire.  Sophomore Daije Harris hit a three-pointer and the `Runners added seven more points while CSUB's defense held the Titans to just five points. Junior Alexxus Gilbert kept the `Runners ahead by adding five points in the third period.

The `Runner momentum stayed hot and finished strong to take a 12-point lead in the fourth period. Bakersfield outscored the Titans 16-15 in the quarter while outrebounding them 18-14 in the second half.

William's led CSUB with 14 points, seven rebounds, and one steal while Bartee finished with four blocks, six points, 10 rebounds, and two steals to end the night. As a team Bakersfield made 36% of its field goals (21-of-56), ending the day with 28 points in the paint and 27 of its points was from the bench.

"That's what we expect from our seniors to step up from when that time comes. For Aja, it was a matter of her taking her time and learning how to run the offense. With Jaz, she's coming back from the ankle injury and she's looking really good right now," said coach McCall

The `Runners will head for a four-game road trip before returning home for a doubleheader with the men on Dec. 16. The first road game will be against Southern Utah on Monday, Nov. 27 at 6:30 p.m. (MT). `Runner fans can watch both games live by finding the links on the women's basketball schedule page.

"This was a great momentum swing for us. For this to be a win at home for us, getting ready to hit the road, I think we are in a good place right now," said McCall.
