`Runners Take The Victory For Their Home Opener

Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif – CSU Bakersfield's women's basketball team controlled all four periods against Fresno Pacific and took their first win of the season, 74-63, in the Icardo Center.

"I'm glad we got the win. We gave up a few too many points," said Greg McCall, Head Coach of the Roadrunners women's basketball team. "We've been talking about executing and did some good things on the offensive end, but defensively against a team like this that you know you have an advantage on you have to be really disciplined."

CSUB got off to a rocky start before the first media timeout and regrouped to earn 18 points and take the lead by two in the first period. Leading the `Runners in the first was senior Aja Williams with five points.

At the start of the second period the `Runners kept the fire going and added 20 points on one three-pointer, nine field goals, and one free throw, making 42% of their shots. Sophomore Kate Tokuhara led the period with five points and two assists. While Williams rounded up another two points to lead at the end of the first 20 minutes.

The momentum stayed hot from the first two quarters and CSUB continued its lead through the third and fourth period adding a superb 36 points in the second half for the night. Bakersfield finished the second half with five steals and 13 defensive rebounds.

McCall talked about what his team did well on Tuesday night, "Overall, I am very happy with the way we played. We came out and played with a lot more energy and effort. We were looking for some point production, so, I am definitely excited about how we played offensively."

Junior forward Malaysia McHenry led the `Runners with 14 points and seven rebounds. Tokuhara ended the day with 12 points, three assists and three steals while junior Jerice Fears led with a game high of nine rebounds, a career high. As a team Bakersfield made 42% of its field goals (30-of-72) and ended the day with 48 points in the paint.

The `Runners will head for the road for two northern California games on Friday, Nov. 14, and Sunday, Nov. 19. CSUB will face off against San Jose State first with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. and then Stanford at 2 p.m. on Sunday. `Runner fans can watch both games live by finding the link on the women's basketball schedule page.
