LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield women's swimming and diving team opened the season with a tri-meet against Southern California and Oregon State as the Roadrunners managed to best one of their two Pac-12 foes. CSUB fell to the ranked Trojans 184-104, but dominated the Beavers 203-88 in a big win to kick off the year.
"Beating Oregon State is huge for us," said Chris Hansen, CSUB's Director of Swimming. "If the women ride the momentum of tonight, this could be the breakout year we have been looking for."
Sophomore standout Jayssie Haynes led the way for the `Runners, posting times near her personal bests in both the 200 (1:53.55) and 500 free (5:00.12). "Jayssie trained hard all summer and her times tonight showed it," Hansen said. "This young lady is on fire!"
Hansen also continued to highlight some other top performers on Friday evening: "Summer D'Arcy, Alisa Cooke, Morgan King, and Alyssa Madero all also had giant swims tonight." A junior breaststroke specialist, D'Arcy finished fourth in the 200 breast (2:24.74) and sixth in the 100 breast (1:07.32). Cooke, a native of Simi Valley, Calif., placed third in the 50 free with a new PR of 24.65.
A sophomore, King posted solid times in the 100 fly (58.18), 50 free (24.71), and 100 free (53.48). Madero, who hails from Las Cruces, N.M., placed third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:14.98.
The Roadrunners will open their home schedule Saturday, Oct. 14, when CSUB hosts Pacific at the Hillman Aquatic Center. The first event is scheduled for 1 p.m. and parking on meet day is free while admission is always free for CSUB swim and dive events.
