`Runners Celebrate 1997 Champion Team With An OT Win At Home

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With four minutes into overtime CSU Bakersfield's men's soccer secures the victory to improve 2-1-0 in the WAC in a back to back battle with Grand Canyon. It was a memorable night as the Roadrunners honored and celebrated there 20th anniversary of the 1997 Division II champion team at the Main Soccer Field.

"It was a perfect night, celebrating 1997 team," said Head Coach Richie Grant. "It was emotional for us to begin with, at half time we felt we didn't need to be a goal down, we told them to stay in it and I thought we stayed alive."

Coach Grant went on to highlight the team's turnover scoring the equalizer to keep the game alive, "When Jamie scored it swung the emotion for us and I thought we had a great chance to still win this game. Sebastian had a great chance with 3 minutes to go then he gets another chance and wins the match for us."

With only two minutes of play in the first half, Goal Keeper Detre Bell saved the `Runners from falling behind early with a shot taken from GCU's Amer Sasivarevic. CSUB took their first shot from sophomore Jacob Alatorre with a quick kick to the left but the Lope's Jeremy Pollard made a diving save to keep the first 10 minutes of the match scoreless. 11 shots were taken in total by both teams before GCU's Malik Smith would be the first scorer of the night in the 40' to keep the lead at the end of the first period.

The first 10 minutes into the second half was quiet until sophomore Jeremie Charron gave CSUB the equalizer with a free kick from Senior Jamie Carey-Morrell to tap it home. However, GCU was not about to go easy on the `Runners; six minutes later and the Lopes take the lead, 2-1. Knowing that this game was a little extra special tonight, the `Runners kept pushing forward and redshirt sophomore Sebastian Mentel crosses to the middle to set Jamie up for an astounding bicycle kick at the 79'.

The rest of the second half continued to be a battle between the `Runners and the `Lopes as they were both handed out yellow cards. Grand Canyon took six more shots to try and break the tie but the equalizer goal by Bakersfield would send them to overtime. Bell kept the `Runners alive by totaling out six saves in the second half.

Overtime meant everything to both teams but Bakersfield's Mentel would find the ball in the left wing and drive it straight from the corner of the box to beat the keeper to secure the victory for the `Runners and the 1997 Champion team!

Bell, a native of Hamilton, Bermuda, made a season high of 10 saves against the Antelopes. GCU outshot CSUB 23-13 in the match and had 12 shots on goal but the `Runners were able to score the final goal to win the match. Carey-Morrell now has four goals on the year, the most of any `Runner while Mentel's overtime shot places him second on the team in goals and sophomore Charron scored his first goal of the season.

The `Runners will return to the Main Soccer Field to host UNLV at home on Sunday, Oct. 8, at 1 p.m.
