Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

`Runners Fall In Heartbreaker To GCU

Grand Canyon, ARIZ. – CSU Bakersfield's women's soccer team traveled to Phoenix on Friday evening to take on the Antelopes. The Roadrunners bared the heat and came back stronger in the second half but lost their chance at WAC post season for the first time in three years, 3-0.

"Although the first goal made it difficult, the second one was the hammer blow because we had grown into the game and looked like the tide was turning," said Gary Curneen, head coach for CSUB's women's soccer.

The Lopes would fire a shot in the first 30 seconds but hit the top of the crossbar to keep CSUB in the game. However, a goal in the first 10 minutes of the game would have the `Runners down in the first half. Milla Benedetti scored her fourth goal of the season to put GCU on the board early. Bakersfield's backline and goalkeeper, Jordan Bertram, kept a solid defense after the first goal to keep the `Runners in. Goalkeeper Jordan Bertram recorded four saves in the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, the `Runners picked up their offense and started playing more aggressively. Six minutes into the second half and GCU would find the net again to score their second goal and then again in the 67th minute to score their third. Runners kept enough possession to hold off the Lopes from scoring again but could not find the goal before the final whistle. Bertram had a total of five saves for the night.

"Even though the game was slipping away, we never gave up and our seniors finished their season with the same heart and commitment that they showed for the past four years. I cannot thank Maja, Morgan, and Michele enough for their service to the program and their impact on players and staff. They are great soccer players but even better people," said Coach Curneen.

The `Runners completed their season with a (6-12-1, 1-5-1WAC) and are looking to come back stronger for next season with only losing three seniors this year. "It's a tough way to finish a season that started so promising for us. This will hurt for a while but it will give us the hunger and motivation when we start working again in preparation for the spring season."
