Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

`Runners Win 2-1 With An Overtime Goal

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - CSU Bakersfield's men's soccer team won in seven minutes of overtime as they hosted UMKC on their senior night and blue/gold game. Roadrunners improve their WAC record to 4-3-1 and stay in as WAC contingents for post play.

"We are pleased with the way we have performed at home," said head coach Richie Grant. "When we have played here the games have been great, entertaining, quality games. Right now we just want to enjoy it before we play a very difficult game on Sunday.

`Runners opened the momentum with midfielder Sam Gomez taking the first shot at the 11th minute and then again 10 seconds later. CSUB's offense outshot UMKC 4-5 and took most of the possession in the first half. However, the first half would go scoreless. Goalkeeper Detre Bell made two saves.

In the second half CSUB took two shots before redshirt sophomore Sebastian Mentel would shoot a rocket at the right corner from freshman Ricardo Soza and put the `Runners on the board at the 59th minute. Not even two minutes later Bell would make a diving save but Roos would get the ball back seconds later and scored the equalizer. Both teams evened out with seven shots and two saves in the second half as the tie game took them to overtime.

Overtime meant everything to both teams and UMKC would open the momentum in the first minute but the shot was wide. Bakersfield shot twice before Mentel would shoot another rocket from the corner to just glance off the UMKC defense and get the game-winning goal for the `Runners. Mentel's two goals for the night gives him a total of five goals for the season, which is tied for the lead with senior Jamie Carey-Morrell

Coach Grant went on to comment on Mentel's successful night, "Tonight when I lay down and say my prayers, I'll thank God for Sebas twice," chuckles Grant. "He's come out big, it's senior night and he is a converted left full back that is now playing as a striker. He's been a real threat and gets chances in at every game but this one he manufactured."

The `Runners will return to the Main Soccer Field to host nationally ranked #15 Air Force at home on Sunday, Oct. 29, at 1 p.m. Air Force will come to the Bakersfield with a 6-0-2 WAC record.
