`Runners Embraced The Cold In Seattle, But Fall 1 Goal Short

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield's women's soccer team traveled to Seattle on Friday evening to take on the Redhawks. The Roadrunners bared the cold and came back stronger in the second half but fell to Seattle U, 0-1.

"I thought we did enough to get a result tonight," said Head Coach of women's soccer Gary Curneen. "Seattle U started strong but we were exceptional in the second half and really took the game to them. Hitting the bar in the closing minutes has summed up our last couple of weeks. We don't have time to feel sorry for ourselves, Sunday is a huge game and we need to make sure we are there physically, mentally and emotionally"

A goal in the first 10 minutes of the game would have the `Runners down in the first half. Redhawks Stephanie Spiekerman scored her first goal of the season to put Seattle on the board early on. Bakersfield got off to a slow start and started to add offensive pressure in the last five minutes of the first half. Goalkeeper Jordan Bertram recorded three saves in the first 45 minutes.

In the second half redshirt junior Sabrina Delgado opens up the momentum for the `Runners at the 59' but the shot was saved by goal keeper Ashley Routh. CSUB played a lot more aggressively during the second half and came close in the last six minutes of the game to almost equalized. Redshirt Aryana Harvey hit the inside of the top post but the possible goal was waved off. `Runners kept enough possession to hold off the Redhawks from scoring again but could not find the goal before the final whistle. Bertram had a total of seven saves for the night.

The `Runners (5-10-1, 0-2-1WAC) will be back at the Main Soccer Field to host Utah Valley for Senior Day on Sunday at 1 p.m. to close out the weekend. Like coach Curneen said Sunday will be important for Bakersfield and all `Runner fans should come loud and proud! Folks who can't make Sunday's game can watched live via WAC Digital Network at WACSPORTS.com.
