Box Score 2 SANTA BARBARA, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield dropped a pair of matches at the UC Santa Barbara Thunderdome Classic Saturday.
In the opening match, Baylor defeated the Roadrunners 3-0. The Bears took set one by a 25-13 score. After trailing the 'Runners for most of the early portion of the second set, Baylor would overcome CSUB and earn a 29-27 victory.
The Roadrunners trailed 21-19 in the third set before scoring five of the next six points to take a 24-22 lead. Baylor called timeout and responded with a Katie Staiger kill. A CSUB hitting error tied the set at 24. Jaeyln Jackson gave the Bears their first match point with a kill. A Baylor block on a Roadrunner hitting attempt clinched the match 26-24.
The match was close throughout as the score was tied 25 times in the three sets as the lead changed hands on 10 occasions. Staiger led all players with 14 kills. She completed the double-double with 11 kills. Anna Grasso paced the 'Runners with 11 kills. Sydney Haynes posted eight kills for the 'Runners while Fabiana Andrade charted 29 assists while Addy Peters recorded 13 digs.
Pittsburgh defeated CSUB 3-0 in the final match of the tournament Saturday night. The Panthers defeated the Roadrunners 25-20 in the first set. Pitt defeated CSUB 25-21 in the second set before wrapping up the match with a 25-15 third set victory.
The Roadrunners held the Panthers to .222 hitting, but CSUB couldn't take advantage, only hitting .113 for the match. Carol Grasso recorded a match high 11 kills for CSUB. She also added six digs and three blocks. Andrade and Sidney Wicks combined for 27 assists out of the 'Runner setter position. Mariah Bell led Pitt with 10 kills and nine digs.
“We showed a little bit more fire against Pitt,” said CSUB director of volleyball Giovana Melo. “However, we are making too many errors and are still playing very inconsistent at this point.”
The 'Runners (1-5) play at home for the first time Tuesday night when CSUB hosts Sacramento State at 7 p.m.
