'Runners Drop Season Opener at Sac State 2-0

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif.- The CSUB Roadrunners dropped their season opener on Friday night 2-0 at Sacramento State following a pair of Hornet goals in the first half.

Sacramento State struck twice just under seven minutes apart to take the lead for good when Adaurie Dyak received a long pass from Regan Smithers creating a one-on-one with the CSUB goalkeeper Jen Padilla. Dyak chipped the ball over the keeper's head for the score in the 21st minute.

Just under seven minutes later, Lydia Bowman's free kick found Andrea Boehm inside the box for the score at 28:53 to give the Hornets the 2-0 advantage. CSUB managed a pair of shots before the end of the half, both were wide of the net.

"It's a tough loss for us because we felt we should have taken something from the game," said head coach Gary Curneen. "We were very much in ascendancy for the first half but the goal rocked us and when we lost that momentum, they hit us again to make it two. Credit to Sac State for taking advantage of that."

Bakersfield came out pressuring in the second half and had several good chances turned away by the Hornets. Madi Giammona and Sabrina Delgado both had early shots saved by Sacramento keeper Destiny Butcher in the first two minutes of the half. Another corner kick opportunity sent by Giammona to Maja Green sailed wide in the 65th minute. CSUB had a total of eight corner kicks in the match with two leading to shots on goal.

"We had enough possessions and created enough chances to get back in the game," Curneen said. "Overall we can feel a little hard done with the result because of our work rate but if we don't take our chances we can't have any complaints."

"We will pick ourselves up, regroup quickly and be ready for Sunday night to put it right in front of our home fans."

The 'Runners outshot Sacramento State 16-15 in the match but were outshot on goal nine to five while Butcher managed five saves for the Hornets in the win. Delgado and Giammona led the 'Runners with a pair of shots on goal each. Padilla make six saves in the match for the Roadrunners, her first career start in goal for CSUB. Padilla appeared in two games last season as a freshman logging 67 minutes.

CSUB returns to action this Sunday night for their home opener against Fresno State at The Main Soccer Field. Tickets are available for $8 (adults), $6 (children 6-17), $3 (kids 3-5) and can be purchased here or by calling 654-BLUE.
