BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – After putting together an impressive week on the field, CSU Bakersfield's Julea Cavazos was named the CollegeSportsMadness.com Western Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week on Apr. 19.
Cavazos, a sophomore outfielder, has been an offensive catalyst for the 'Runners all season and reached peak performance during last week's four games. In CSUB's mid-week game against UC Riverside, Cavazos recorded her 12th multi-hit game of the season by going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
When Seattle U came to Bakersfield for a three-game set, Cavazos stepped up for the 'Runners and helped lead CSUB to its first-ever WAC series sweep. In the first game, the native of Temecula, Calif. went 3-for-4 while scoring two runs. In the second game of the series, Cavazos reached base safely in all five of her plate appearances while tallying four hits, including a triple, and a walk.
To wrap up the weekend, Cavazos went 0-for-2, but walked twice and was one of two 'Runners to come around and score on CSUB's walk-off hit to clinch the sweep. On the week, Cavazos batted .643 (9-for-14), had a .786 slugging percentage, and a .706 on-base percentage. The outfielder is also now CSUB's season leader in batting average (.389), currently tied for second best in the WAC, and leads the 'Runners with 14 multi-hit games.
The third-place Roadrunners will be back in WAC action this weekend when CSUB travels to Las Cruces, N.M. to take on the conference-leading NM State Aggies.
