'Runners Defeat Seattle U To Earn Third Seed

SEATTLE—CSU Bakersfield held Seattle U to one field goal in the fourth quarter as the Roadrunners defeated the Redhawks 66-52 in the women's basketball regular season finale for both schools.

CSUB tied for third in the WAC with Utah Valley, but with the Wolverines losing 65-54 to Grand Canyon Saturday. As a result, the Roadrunners get the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. CSUB and Seattle U (No. 6 seed) will meet again on Wednesday in the first round Tournament in Las Vegas. Tip is set for 7 p.m. in the Orleans Arena.

The Roadrunners led by 16 midway through the second quarter before taking a 36-24 lead into halftime. The Redhawks opened the second half on an 8-0 run and would outscore the Roadrunners 19-7 at one point in the third. CSUB outscored the Redhawks 9-3 to make it a 52-46 game at the end of three. The 'Runners turned up the defense in the final stanza. In addition to limiting SU from the field, CSUB outrebounded the Redhawks 16-8 in the fourth.

“We didn't panic when Seattle U made their run and we were able to sustain the lead,” said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. I was proud that we remained poised and continued to play.”

The Roadrunners held Seattle U to 29.1% shooting (16-of-55) for the game and outrebounded SU 44-31. Batabe Zempare recorded her 32nd career double-double as she scored a game high 16 points and pulled in a game high 14 rebounds. Zempare added three assists and one steal. Erika Williams scored 15 points while Dajy Vines added 12. Junior Brittany Sims grabbed a career high 10 rebounds.

Seattle was led by Kaylee Best who scored 14 points. Tal Sahar tallied 12 while Ashlyn Lewey posted 10.

“We are playing our best right now,” McCall said. “We are doing good things both offensive and defensively. Our senior leadership is working hard and that leadership has taken over the rest of the club.”
