Box Score PHOENIX—Batabe Zempare became the seventh active Division I player with 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds as the 6-2 forward led CSU Bakersfield to a 76-67 Western Athletic Conference women's basketball victory over Grand Canyon Thursday night.
Zempare hit a pair of free throws with 6:39 to play in the fourth quarter to reach the 1,000 career-point plateau. The 6-2 forward, who entered the night 18 away from 1,000 points, scored a game high 23 points on 9-for-15 shooting from the field. She was 5-of-6 from the free throw line. She grabbed a game high 13 rebounds to bring her career total to 1,086.
The Roadrunners led 25-20 at halftime and 54-45 after three quarters. CSUB would go up by as many as nine in the fourth quarter before Cheyne Hedrington's layup with 56 seconds to go, cut it to 68-62 for the 'Lopes. After a GCU timeout, Dajy Vines took a three-pointer from beyond the NBA three-point line and made the attempt for a 71-62 CSUB lead. The Roadrunners forced a turnover which led to an Alyssa Shannon bucket he largest CSUB lead of the night, 73-62. After a Dana Jones layup, Shannon was fouled. The top free throw shooter in the WAC, Shannon connected 1-of-2 for a 74-64 lead.
Hedrington was fouled with nine seconds. She made 1-of-2 before Shannon was fouled again on the inbounds pass. Up 74-65, Shannon put the lead back into double digits with two successful free throw attempts. An Alyx Bloom jumper at the buzzer became the final points of the night.
Vines scored a season high 18 points and posted seven rebounds. Shannon tallied 13 points while Erika Williams scored 12 for the 'Runners. Jones led the Antelopes with 22 points and 10 rebounds. She attempted 15 of the 21 Grand Canyon (15-14) shots from the free throw line. She only connected on eight of those tries. The Roadrunners were 17-of-19 from the charity stripe.
The Roadrunners (10-18) have now moved into a tie for fourth in the WAC with Grand Canyon (7-6). Both teams are only one game back of UTRGV and Utah Valley for second in the league. CSUB heads to Seattle U (9-18, 3-9 WAC) next Saturday to conclude the regular season.
