Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield tied the school Division I record for most three-pointers in a game as the Roadrunners defeated UT Rio Grande Valley 80-66 in Western Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
On CSUB's senior day, the 'Runners connected on 15 three-point field goals, tying the school mark that was set Nov. 21, 2009 against Hawai'i. The Roadrunners were 15-of-30 from three-point range in the game.
The Roadrunners (9-18, 6-6 WAC) made seven of their first 10 shots to take a 22-14 leads after 10 minutes. The Vaqueros cut the lead to 27-21 midway through the second before a 6-0 CSUB spurt gave the 'Runners a 13-point lead, with 3:59 to play in the first half. UTRGV closed the opening frame on a 12-3 run that made it 37-33 at halftime.
The Roadrunners used a 19-3 run in the third quarter that was powered by three Erika Williams three-pointers that gave the 'Runners their largest lead of the game, 63-40 with 71 seconds to go in the period. CSUB sank 6-of-10 three-pointers in the third quarter.
Williams scored a career high 25 points. The 6-0 forward was 7-of-11 from three-point land and was 8-of-13 for the field for the game. Williams added four assists and three rebounds. Batabe Zempare recorded her 30th career double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Zempare is now 18 points away for 1,000 in her career. She is seventh among active Division I players in career rebounds with 1,073. Alyssa Shannon scored 13 points, dished out seven assists, and grabbed five rebounds. Shannon has now moved into second in school history with 394 career assists.
CSUB held UTRGV (15-12, 7-5 WAC) to 37.3% shooting (22-of-59) for the game, but the Vaqueros outrebounded the 'Runners 39-35. Bernesha Peters led UTRGV with 16 points. Anushka Maldonado scored 15 while Nichele Hyman had 10. Shawnte' Goff, the WAC leader in scoring at the start of the week, did not score a point in 11 minutes.
“This was a great win for us,” said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. “It was great for our seniors in their last game on the Blue Floor. Today's win puts us back into the thick of things in the league standings as UTRGV was second coming into today. We have still some work to do and take care of ourselves over the final two games.”
