OREM, Utah—A poor shooting second quarter proved to be the difference for CSU Bakersfield as the Roadrunners dropped a 72-53 decision to Utah Valley Saturday afternoon.

The Wolverines (12-13, 5-5 WAC) used a pair of 8-0 runs in the first quarter as UVU made eight of 11 field goal attempts. The Roadrunners connected eight of 14 first quarter attempts as Utah Valley led 20-19 after one.

CSUB missed their first five shots of the second as the Wolverines used an 8-0 run to take a nine-point advantage. The Roadrunners would only make one of 13 second quarter field goal attempts as UVU would take 36-23 lead into halftime.

The Roadrunners worked the Wolverines' lead down to 45-35 with just over four to go in the third before a Patrice Tostan three-point play sparked a 13-7 UVU spurt that ended the frame with the Wolverines up 58-42. The Roadrunner shooting went cold again in the fourth as CSUB missed seven of its final nine shots.

"We didn't do a good job defensively with their perimeter players," said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. "We struggled with our shoting, we are going to have to rebound heading into next week."

Six of the 10 players who saw action for Utah Valley scored in double figures, led by Toston who had 14. Georgia Agnew charted 13 while Mariah Seals had 12. Deijah Blanks tallied 11 while Sam Loggins and Rebecca MaWhinney each scored 10.

Addi Walters led the 'Runners with 12 points. Batabe Zempare grabbed 12 rebounds for CSUB.

The Roadrunners (8-17, 5-5 WAC) return home for the final two games in the Icardo Center next week. CSUB hosts league leader NM State (21-3, 10-0 WAC) Thursday at 7 p.m. The game can be seen on the WAC Digital Network. The final home game of the year is next Saturday when the 'Runners host UTRGV (14-11, 6-4 WAC) at 1 p.m. That game can be seen on the Roadrunner Sports Network.
