Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz.—CSU Bakersfield defeated Grand Canyon in straight sets Friday night in Western Athletic Conference volleyball play.
The Roadrunners defeated the Lopes 25-21 in both the first and second set before hitting .630 in the third (17-0-27) to earn the sweep 25-20. Carol Grasso led the 'Runners with 12 kills. The 5-6 outside hitter added nine digs, two service aces, and two solo blocks. Marina Sanches hit a match hit .562 as she posted 11 kills (11-2-16).
CSUB setters Emily Lopes and Fabiana Andrade combined for 39 assists. Lopes charted 20 of the assists to go along with nine digs. Roadrunner libero Jocelyn Rodriguez made a match high 11 digs. Katrice Pond paced Grand Canyon (4-16, 0-8 WAC) with 13 kills. Lopes' setter Heidi Carpenter recorded a double-double of 19 assists and 10 digs.
"We played as a team tonight!" said CSUB director of volleyball Giovana Melo. "We played really well tonight."
The Roadrunners (8-13, 5-3 WAC) travel to UT Rio Grande Valley next Thursday. First serve is set for 5 p.m. (CT).
