Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—On a night in which CSU Bakersfield was outshot by 14, the Roadrunners took advantage of a first half goal by Mamadou Balde to defeat Incarnate World 1-0.
Balde put the Roadrunners into the lead when his blast from just outside the 18 which went off of UIW goalie Jorge Guzman and into the goal. At half the Cardinals outshot the 'Runners 7-1, but each team only had one shot on goal.
The Cardinals (3-6-2, 1-2-1 WAC) turned up the attack in the second half, outshooting the Roadrunners by eight, 11-3. The CSUB defense was stellar, turning back UIW as Nicolas Clever would make saves on all five shots on goal that were taken by the Cardinals. The Cardinals would outshoot CSUB 18-4 for the match. The shutout was Clever's first of the season and the 12th of his career.
“The result was the most important thing tonight,” said CSUB head coach Richie Grant. “I don't think we played our best tonight, but we protected what we had really well. We tried to get a second goal, but we had to protect what we had tonight. It was an opportunistic strike from Mamadou in the first half. Games like tonight have gone against us this season, it was nice to win.”
The Roadrunners (4-9, 2-3 WAC) travel to Air Force (9-4, 3-1 WAC) Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. (MT) start.
