Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev.—UNLV defeated CSU Bakersfield 3-1 in the Western Athletic Conference men's soccer opener for both schools Friday night.
Marques Pitt broke the seal for the Rebels (3-7) in the 14th minute when he took Danny Musovski's pass and shot past Nicolas Clever in the CSUB goal. Musovski put UNLV up 2-0 just 55 seconds into the second half. Musovski took a Memo Diaz pass and scored from 14 feet out.
The Roadrunners got on the board in the 66th minute. With the Rebels' defense looking for an offsides call, Jacob Alatorre's flick pass went over the top of the UNLV defense and found Jamie Carey-Morrell. Carey-Morrell back-heeled the ball into the Rebels' net to record his second goal of the season.
CSUB took two shots and had a corner kick opportunity in the final 10+ minutes but could not find the tying goal. Musovski put the game away with his second goal of the night in the 89th minute. Musovski stretched the CSUB defense to the left before scoring on a cross to the right side of the 'Runner net.
Clever kept the 'Runners in the match, making six saves as UNLV outshot CSUB 13-9. Five of the Roadrunners seven losses (2-7) this season have been by one goal.
“The better team won tonight,” said CSUB head coach Richie Grant. “We struggled with their strengths and that cost us in the end. We showed some fight to get back to 2-1, but we were not great at creating clean chances.”
CSUB returns to the Main Soccer Field Sunday when the Roadrunners host defending WAC champion Seattle U at 1 p.m. The Redhawks (5-4) defeated No. 21 Utah Valley 2-0 in their league opener Friday night.
