Walters Shoots CSUB Past Seattle U 76-68

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Addi Walters reset the CSU Bakersfield school record for most three-pointers in a game to lead the Roadrunners past Seattle U 76-68 in Western Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.

Walters was 9-of-14 from beyond the arc, breaking the old mark of eight which was original set by Amber Williams against CSUN Jan. 11, 2010 and tied by Madison McKenney on Nov. 16, 2011. Walters, who scored 16 in the first half against the Redhawks, was 11-of-18 from the field. She is the first CSUB player to score over 30 points in a game since Feb. 20, 2014 when Tyonna Outland charted 36 against Missouri-Kansas City. Walters made both of her free throw attempts and made a steal in 32 minutes on the Icardo Center's blue floor.

“We kept finding ways to get Addi the ball,” said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. “They went to a box-and-one on her which got her frustrated. She wanted the ball so bad, she began to post up down low. Once we figured out what they were running, we tried to use our zone sets against it, but that wasn't working, so we went to our man sets and tried to isolate our posts and that's where Batabe came through in the end.”

The Roadrunners led 36-30 at halftime before SU cut the lead to one with 6:55 to play in the third quarter. CSUB mounted a 10-0 charge that would result in the largest lead of the game for the Roadrunners. CSU Bakersfield would take a 60-52 lead into the fourth quarter.

CSUB led by 10 early in the final frame before the Redhawks would chip away at the 'Runner advantage, making it a 69-66 game with 4:27 to go when Jacinta Beckley connected on a three. Seattle U missed their next four shots as Batabe Zempare scored the next four points for the 'Runners for a seven-point CSUB lead. Parry made the final SU basketball of the game with 35 seconds to play as the Roadrunners made three-of-four free throw attempts in the final 31 seconds.

Roadrunner point guard Alyssa Shannon recorded her first career double-double as she scored 12 points and tied her career high with 10 assists. Zempare earned her 26th career double-double as she posted 11 points and 10 rebounds. Four SU players scored in double figures, led by Kaylee Best who had 15. Tal Sahar had 14 points and eight rebounds. Beckley tallied 13 while Masha Shtikel added 11 points and eight rebounds.

CSU Bakersfield shot 27-of-67 from the floor (40.3%) while Seattle went 22-of-53 (41.5%) from the field. On the strength of Walters' performance, the CSUB bench outscored SU 51-24. The Roadrunners outrebounded the Redhawks (8-10, 2-1 WAC) 40-33 and forced 16 Seattle U turnovers.

“I am very happy with our effort on both ends of the floor today, especially on the offensive end,” McCall said. “I thought we led down a bit defensively towards the end, we allowed them to drive to their strong side too much. We are going to get better as we move on.”

The Roadrunners (5-13, 2-1 WAC) hit the road for a two-game road trip beginning next Thursday at UTRGV. Tip is set for 7 p.m. (CST). CSUB returns home Jan. 28 for a 7 p.m. start against Grand Canyon. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com. The game can also be seen on the Roadrunner Digital Network.
