CSUB And Sac State Play To 1-1 Draw

Box Score

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield and Sacramento State played to a 1-1 tie in men's soccer action Sunday afternoon.

Christian Duarte headed in a Simon Doherty pass from the goal line in the 62nd minute to give the Roadrunners (1-1-1) a 1-0 lead. Dante Niño was also credited with an assist on the play.

“We had good control of the game and deserved to go up 1-0,” said CSUB head coach Richie Grant. “Christian took his goal very well, after a good pass from Dante.”

The Hornets pressed after going down, taking three shots in a five minute span immediately following the CSUB goal. Two of the attempts went wide. Elias Rieland's attempt went on goal where Roadrunner goalie Nicolas Clever made a save.

Sacramento State tied the score in the 85th minute when Paul Geyer headed in a Fernando Ochoa pass that came off an Isaac Flores free kick. The Sac State goal marked the first time since overtime of the 2010 MPSF finals that the Hornets scored against the Roadrunners (a span of 535 minutes in six matches).

“Credit to Sacramento State, they came at us with everything and in the end we were fortunate not to concede in extra time,” Grant said.”

The Hornets (0-3-1) took the only two shots in the first overtime, both went high. Sac State's Cylus Sandoval recorded first shot of the second overtime before Brian Charles took CSUB's first shot of the extra frames in the 102nd minute, but it went wide.  Stephen Church's attempt in the 103rd minute for the Roadrunners was high.  Ochoa's header with 29 seconds remaining went wide and proved to be the final shot attempt for either team as the match ended in the tie.

The Roadrunners would outshoot the Hornets 19-13 and would hold an 11-2 corner kick advantage for the match.

“This was a solid weekend for our program and prepared us well for the challenges of the WAC in October,” Grant said.

CSU Bakersfield opens at home Friday night when the Roadrunners host Loyola Marymount at 7:30 p.m.  Grant will be going for his 200th career victory as a collegiate head coach against the Lions (199-153-30). Tickets are available at Vallitix.com.
