No. 12 Hawai'i Hands CSUB A 3-0 Loss

HONOLULU, Hawai'i—No. 12 Hawai'i defeated CSU Bakersfield 3-0 Sunday night in the conclusion of a two-match series between the two schools.

The teams played to seven ties to begin the first set. With the score knotted up at 10, the Rainbow Wahine used kills from Kalei Greeley and Emily Magilo and a block from the duo to score three in row. CSUB called timeout and got a kill from Kortney Freeland to regain the serve. A Roadrunner service error put the ball back into Hawai'i's hands where the Rainbow Wahine tallied the next two points.

A Hawai'i service error gave the serve back to the Roadrunners. Greeley's kill again placed the 'Bows on offense. UH posted back-to-back blocks to take an 18-13 advantage. CSUB scored the next three, beginning with a bad UH set.  Kelsee Sawyer blocked Magilo at the net and followed it up with a kill to reduce to lead to three and force a Rainbow Wahine timeout.

The timeout worked as Tai Manu-Olevao earned the kill for Hawai'i out of the 75-second break. An attack error from CSUB which was followed by a Magill kill pushed the lead to six for the Rainbow Wahine. Sawyer and Magill traded kills, preceding a Hawai'i service error. Magill again tallied a kill for a Rainbow Wahine five-point lead. Sydney Haynes kept CSUB in it with a kill of her own. At 23-19, Nikki Taylor, the current National Player of the Week, misfired on an attack attempt. Magill responded with a kill for set point. Taylor and Magillo blocked Edithza Urias at the net for a 25-20 victory.

Hawai'i jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set before the Roadrunners used a timeout.  The Rainbow Wahine posted five of the next six points out of the timeout.  The run would conclude at 11-2 for UH as Hawai'i went up by 13, 17-4. The Rainbow Wahine outhit CSUB .545 to .000 as Hawai'i took a 2-0 match lead into the intermission with a 25-12 decision.  

The opening portion of the third set featured five ties between Hawai'i and the Roadrunners.  With the score knotted up at five, the Rainbow Wahine took the lead with a 7-2 spurt, resulting in a CSUB timeout.  The Roadrunners put up three of the next five points to close to 14-10.

Hawai'i responded with four of the next six before the teams exchanged service errors.  A Hawai'i kill was again followed by a CSUB service error to provide the Rainbow Wahine a 20-14 lead. The teams again traded points when Tayler Higgins put down a kill. Annie Mitchem recorded three consecutive kills for a 25-15 third set victory for Hawai'i and a straight sets victory.

The Rainbow Wahine outhit the Roadrunners .391 to .064 for the match, but only held a 9-6 advantage in the team blocks' category. Maglio hit .500 (12-3-18) to pace UH. Taylor had 11 kills. Hawai'i setter Tayler Higgins charted 39 assists and seven digs.

Sawyer led CSUB with 10 kills. The 5-10 Temecula, Calif. native hit .a team hit .304 for the match. Haynes earned five kills and three blocks. Luiza Martins directed the offense to 19 assists.

"I am extremely disappointed with our performance today," said CSUB director of volleyball Giovana Melo.

CSU Bakersfield (2-10) opens Western Athletic Conference play next Saturday at Grand Canyon (2-10). First serve is set for 1 p.m. The Roadrunners will open the home portion of the 2015 slate on Oct. 8 when CSUB hosts UTRGV at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com.
