CSUB Swept On Final Day Of USF Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—CSU Bakersfield dropped a pair of matches on day two of the San Francisco Invitational Saturday.

“I saw glimpses of a great team,” said CSUB director of volleyball Giovana Melo. “However, we are very inconsistent and still a little undisciplined.”

Match 1--San Francisco 3, CSUB 1

CSUB faced the host, San Francisco, in match one of the day and lost 3-1. The Roadrunners took the first set 25-22. CSUB hit .300 (17-5-40) for the set. Senior transfer Edithza Urias had the hot hand as she posted a .500 average (5-0-10) to begin the match.

The Dons jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the second set on the way to defeating the Roadrunners 25-14 to even the match.  San Francisco tied the match by using a strong defense, limiting CSUB to .167 hitting. The Dons committed one hitting error in 25 chances during the second set (a .560 average, 15-1-25).

USF earned a 2-1 match lead when the Dons defeated the Roadrunners 25-16. The Dons outhit CSUB .286-to-.172 in the third set. With the score tied at four in the fourth set, San Francisco mounted a 5-1 run. CSUB responded by scoring the next four points to tie the match up 9-9.

The set was tied at 10, when USF scored four of the next six points. The set would remain close. CSUB cut the Dons' lead to 19-18 when USF called timeout. A  San Francisco hitting tied the score at 19. Roadrunner setter Luiza Martins put CSUB up by one with a kill. Urias' kill provided the Roadrunners a two-point advantage. Jessica Gaffney's kill on the ensuing possession made it a 21-20 set.

Madison Murtaugh's kill tied the match once again, 21-21. Courtney Sabahi's ace returned the lead to San Francisco.  Gaffney's kill returned a two-point lead to USF, but a Kiara McKibben service error got the lead back down to one.  Paige Gettman blocked a Madison Murtaugh attempt to tie the score as the Dons called timeout.

Sara Staengale put the Dons back up with a kill. Murtaugh and Katarina Pilepic blocked a CSUB attempt on the final point of the match to give USF a 25-23 set victory and the 3-1 match win.

Pilepic led the Dons with 13 kills while Oluoma Okaro had 11 kills. Urias was the Roadrunner leader as she posted a match high 14 kills. Martins tallied 25 assists.  Morginne Demarco and Sophie Flemion charted 12 digs. For Flemion, a redshirt junior, it was a career high.

Game 2, San Diego State 3, CSUB 2

San Diego State rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat CSU Bakersfield 3-2 in the final match of the tournament for the 'Runners.

The Roadrunners sped to an 8-2 run that would help CSUB take an 18-11 lead midway through the first set.  The Aztecs responded with an 8-1 spurt of their own to tie the match 19-19. A SDSU service error returned the lead to CSUB which was followed by a Carol Grasso kill. Down 21-19, the Aztecs received a kill from Emma Fuzie, but an Urias kill put the Roadrunners back up by two.

Ciara Brown's kill returned the serve to the Aztecs, but San Diego State couldn't take advantage as Danielle Bolden served the ball into the net. CSUB earned its first set point on an Urias' kill which was followed by Sara Little's sixth kill of the set that gave the Roadrunners a 25-21 victory.

CSUB opened the second set by scoring eight of the first 10 points. A 12-6 lead forced a San Diego State timeout. The Roadrunners recorded five of the next six points to force the Aztecs to call their final timeout of the set down 17-7.  The timeout worked as San Diego State scored 12 of the next 15 to work the CSUB lead down to 20-19.

The Roadrunners called timeout, but SDSU posted the next two points and took the lead by one on a Deja Harris kill. After a CSUB attack error put the Aztecs ahead by two, Little's kill returned the serve to the Roadrunners.  Another Harris kill again made it a two-point SDSU lead.  An Aztecs' hitting error reduced the lead to 23-22. Demarco tied the score with a service ace. CSUB went up 24-23 on a Brown hitting error but Fuzie tied the score with a kill. A Hayley Jones service error gave the Roadrunners a second set point but Brown's sixth kill of the match tied it up at 25.

Set point number three for CSUB came on an Urias kill but Baylee Little created a 26-26 set with a kill of her own.  The fourth Roadrunner set point was created off a Harris hitting error but she responded with a kill for a 27-27 score.  SDSU earned their first set point at 28-27 when they blocked a CSUB attack. Danielle Bolden's serve went into the net.

At 28-28, CSUB committed a service error for the Aztec's second set point.  Sydney Haynes' kill knotted the score at 29. Harris' third attack error of the set made it 30-29 in favor of CSUB. Brown tied it again with a kill. The Roadrunners went to Haynes again and she responded with a kill for a 31-30 score. Urias provided the Roadrunners with the winning point with a kill and a 32-30 final.

The Aztecs opened the third set by taking a 6-3 lead and never looked back as San Diego State got back into the match with a 25-15 victory.  Poor hitting plagued the 'Runner again as the Aztecs limited CSUB to .125 for the set. SDSU committed only two errors in 31 chances (17-2-31) for a .484 average.

Tied at six to begin the fourth set, SDSU scored four consecutive points for a lead that gave the Aztecs the advantage for good. The Aztecs would win the set 25-14 to force the fifth set.

Three CSUB hitting errors and a Baylee Little kill opened a 4-0 lead for San Diego State at the start of the final stanza. After a Roadrunner timeout, a Brown kill made it 5-0. Back-to-back kills from Gettman and Katie Dunbar-Lowe got CSUB on the board. An ace from Dunbar-Lowe got the SDSU lead down to two.

The teams exchanged points on the ensuing possessions. At 6-4, San Diego State scored the next three points.  Both squads again traded kills before three consecutive SDSU aces pushed their lead to 13-5. An Aztecs' hitting error provided CSUB an opportunity to serve. A Bolden kill created match point for San Diego State. Alexis Cage's kill was the game winning point for the Aztecs.

Brown and Harris each registered 15 kills to lead SDSU.  Baylee Little had 13 kills while Cage added 10 kills. The Aztecs setter, Hailey Jones, tallied 56 assists.

Urias paced the Roadrunners with 19 kills. Little reset her career high with 10 kills while Kelsee Sawyer also registered 10 kills. Flemion reset her career high with 21 assists. Martins also dished out 21 assists. Demarco earned 12 digs. Carol Grasso, and Kayla Tinker each made 11 digs.

Martins was named to the All-Tournament team. She recorded 64 assists, 19 digs, three kills, and one block during tournament play.
