TEMPE, Ariz.—No. 19 CSU Bakersfield opened the ASU Sand Volleyball Challenge 3-2 against New Mexico Friday night.
New Mexico (1-9) defeated the Roadrunners 2-1 at No. 2 before Kelsee Sawyer (Jr., Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) and Hazel Perrens (Jr., Stavanger, Norway (Louisiana-Monroe) tied the dual at one with a 2-1 victory at No. 4.
The No. 5 team of Luiza Martins (Jr., Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Western Nebraska CC) and Star Tucker-Campbell (Jr., Moorpark, Calif., Moorpark HS) earned a straight sets victory to put CSUB up 2-1. Mariah Alvidrez (R-Sr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) and Molly O'Hagan (Sr., Tonganoxie, Kan., Tonganoxie HS) clinched the dual for the Roadrunners with a 2-0 victory in the No. 1 slot. The Lobos won in straights sets at No. 3 to conclude the dual.
The tournament continues Saturday. CSUB (10-6) takes on No. 10/12 Arizona to begin play at 10 a.m. and face Arizona State at 5 p.m. to conclude the regular season.
