Outland Scores 2000th Point As 'Runners Defeat UVU

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Tyonna Outland (R-Sr., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) scored her 2,000th career point Saturday as CSU Bakersfield defeated Utah Valley 78-54 in the regular season final for the Roadrunners.

Outland, who needed 12 to get to 2,000 to begin the day, ended the contest with a game high 21 points. She now has 2,009 career points and became the 339th Division I women's basketball player to score at least 2,000 since the NCAA began to administrate the sport in 1981.

“It's a great feeling to get this accomplishment,” Outland said. “I couldn't do any of this without my teammates, my coaches, and my family believing in me and pushing me. It's been hard, but it's been worth it.”

The Roadrunners led 42-30 at halftime and broke the game open with a 13-3 run early in the second half that pushed the lead to 20. CSUB forced 23 Wolverine turnovers which were turned into 23 points. The 'Runners made 16 steals and held a 12-2 advantage in fast break points. Rhaiah Spooner-Knight, who scored 13 points in the first half, was limited to four in the second half for a team high 17.

“It was a great way to finish off the regular season,” said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. “I'm very proud of our team and of our seniors. They are going out on top and they are leaving a legacy for our program.”

Outland also led the Roadrunners in rebounds with six. Her two fellow seniors, Brooklynn Hinkens (Lake Tapps, Auburn-Riverside HS) and Shaquita Smith (Buffalo, N.Y., ASA College) both scored in double figures. Hinkens posted 14 while Smith had 11. Erika Williams (R-So., Fresno, Calif., Diamond Bar HS) added 10.

Spooner-Knight also grabbed 11 rebounds. Mariah Seals scored 15 for UVU while Sam Loggins had a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. CSUB concludes the regular season with a 22-7 record and an 11-3 mark in WAC play. The Roadrunners have tied the school Division I record for most wins in a season (22, 2010-11) while winning at least 20 for the ninth time in the history of the program.

“The schedule was set up for 20+ wins,” McCall said. “There were a couple of games that we thought we should have had. But our ultimate goal is to reach the WAC Tournament and make the NCAA Tournament. We know what to expect at the WAC Tournament. If we stay focused and do the things we are supposed to do then we'll be OK.”

CSUB improved to 16-0 at home this season with the win and have now won 22 consecutive home games since losing to Idaho on Jan. 18, 2014. The streak is currently tied with Maryland for the fourth-longest active streak in Division I.

CSUB opens WAC Tournament play Wednesday when the Roadrunners, the No. 2 seed, face the seventh seed, Chicago State, at 4:30 p.m. The tournament will be played at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. For more ticket information head to wacsports.com
