BAKERSFIELD, Calif.-- The Roadrunner softball team will continue the 2015 campaign with its second tournament of the year as CSU Bakersfield will head to San Diego. The 'Runners will take on the USD Tournament, playing another five games from Feb. 13-15. CSUB will face off against Southern Utah, Montana, Kent State, and San Diego.
“This is a great weekend to see how our team bounces back and is resilient,” said CSU Bakersfield's Head Coach, Crissy Buck-Ziegler. “After last weekend, there are things that we are cleaning up this week in practice to make sure that we learn from our mistakes. Our seniors need to step up and help lead this team. They know what is expected in this program and how we rise to any challenges. We are fighters and scrappers and that needs to start to show.”
CSU Bakersfield opened the 2015 season against some of the toughest teams they will face all year. Two teams in last weekend's tournament in Las Vegas were ranked in the NCAA Top 25 (No. 11/13 Washington and No. 15 Minnesota). After going 0-5 on the weekend, the 'Runners will look to rebound in San Diego.
In the opening weekend, senior Kelsie Monroe (Los Banos, Calif., San Joaquin Delta College) continued to be the workhorse of the 'Runner pitching rotation. The righty started four of the five games while pitching 16.1 innings. On the offensive end, Sydney Raeber (Jr., Hanford, Calif., Hanford HS) and Natalie Saucedo (Jr., Burlingame, Calif., College of San Mateo) led CSUB with four hits apiece while the former drove in a team-high three runs.
The 'Runners will open the tournament with a single game on Friday at 11 a.m. against Southern Utah. The 'Runners and Thunderbirds will have a replay Saturday at 2 p.m. before CSUB takes on Montana at 7 p.m. Sunday will feature two more games as Bakersfield faces Kent State at 11:30 a.m. and the host team San Diego at 4:30 p.m. before heading home.
