Zempare Keys CSUB Comeback Victory At Seattle U

Box Score

SEATTLE, Wash.--Batabe Zempare (Jr., Accra, Ghana, Scottsdale Chaparral HS) keyed a game-changing 15-1 run to lead CSU Bakersfield past Seattle U 69-62 Saturday afternoon.

Zempare's three-point play with 7:21 remaining jump started the run that would take the game from its ninth tie (53-53) to a 63-54 CSUB advantage with 2:03 to go in the game. Crystal Allen would cut off the run with a layup at 1:38 and a free throw by Jazmine Johnson with 52 seconds left would cut the Redhawk (6-15, 3-3 WAC) deficit to six.

The Roadrunners (15-6, 4-2 WAC) who struggled from the free throw line for most of the game (CSUB, normally 78% from the line, shot 51.7%, 15-of-29, from the line for the night), made 6-of-8 attempts from the charity stripe down the stretch to put the game away.

“We were glad to come away with the victory,” said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. “It wasn't the prettiest win, but we will take it.”

Zempare recorded her league leading eighth double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. The 6-2 forward has 16 double-doubles in her career, the most of any active WAC player. Tyonna Outland (R-Sr., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) led all scorers with 22 points, the 27th 20+ point performance of her career.

Outland tied the CSUB Division I school record for most free throw attempts in a game with 18 (9-18). Kelley Traver had 18 attempts against Chicago State on Mar. 6, 2008. Lake Tapps, Wash. native Brooklynn Hinkens (Sr., Auburn-Riverside HS) came off the bench to score 14 for the Roadrunners.

Taelor Ross led SU with 19 points. Allen scored 15. Seattle U outshot the Roadrunners 40.7 (24-of-59) to 38.5% (25-of-65) for the game. The Redhawks out rebounded the 'Runners 44-41. CSUB made 13 steals and forced 24 Seattle turnovers.

“Our team played hard and we forced a lot of turnovers,” McCall said. “Our bench performed well, we are glad to get such a hard road win.”

CSUB continues a three-game road trip at Utah Valley Thursday night. The game will get underway at 7 p.m. (MST). The Roadrunners return home Feb 12 for a 7 p.m. game against Texas-Pan American. Tickets are available at vallitix.com.
