Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Allie Green's three-point play with 0.8 seconds remaining gave Pepperdine a 76-73 victory over CSU Bakersfield in women's basketball action Tuesday night.
After trailing by 10 at the half-way point of the third quarter, the Roadrunners took a 69-68 lead when Erika Williams hit a jumper in the paint with just under three minutes remaining in the game. With 1:54 to play, Erica Ogwumike's layup returned the lead to the Waves. Alyssa Shannon put the 'Runners back up 71-70 with a layup of her own 30 seconds later.
Shannon fouled Paige Fecske at the 1:03 mark, but the Pepperdine point guard could only make 1-of-2 free throws and tied the game at 71. Batabe Zempare's offensive rebound on the ensuing CSUB possession and was fouled by Ogwumike. The 6-2 forward sank both free throws with 44 ticks on the clock.
Pepperdine worked the ball down to Ogwumike who had the ball stolen by Jerice Fears. A scramble ensued which resulted in the Waves getting the ball back and leading to Olivia Ogwumike being fouled with 27 seconds remaining. She made both attempts to tie the game for the fourth time. CSUB called a timeout, taking advantage of the new rule in which teams can advance the ball to half court in the final minute of play.
CSUB ran the clock down to six seconds when Williams attempted to drive to the basket. Ogwumike stole the ball, dribbled the length of the court and passed the ball to Green who made a layup as time expired. After a conference by the officials, it was determined that Green was fouled and that 0.8 seconds should be put back on the clock. Green made her free throw attempt with the Roadrunners calling timeout. Again at half court, CSUB inbounded the ball to Addi Walters who attempted a three-pointer that fell short as time expired.
Pepperdine outshot CSU Bakersfield 57.1% (28-of-49) to 38% (27-of-71). The Roadrunners forced 18 Waves' turnovers. Pepperdine outrebounded the 'Runners 37-31, but CSUB had eight more offensive rebounds (11-3). The Waves scored 20 points off fast breaks, compared to only four.
Ogwumike led the Waves with 19 points. Fecske, the Pepperdine point guard, scored 12 points, dished out nine assists, and grabbed six rebounds. Keitra Wallace scored 12 points and had seven rebounds off the Pepperdine bench before fouling out.
Williams paced the Roadrunners with 19 points. Walters, a freshman, scored a season high 15 points coming off the CSUB bench. Shannon surpassed the 300-career assist plateau with a career high 10. The Bakersfield native is fourth in school history with 307 career assists.
“This was a disappointing loss,” said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. “We didn't play a complete 40-minute game. When you don't play 40 minutes with great intensity and the will to want to stop somebody, this is the result you are going to get.”
“We repeated a pattern tonight,” McCall continued. “We have been in so many games this year, but we couldn't make shots in the first half and (fall behind). In the second half, we play (so much better) and we got it all back and take the lead. I thought we might have gone a little early with the last shot, but a fluke turnover on a play we just scored on the last two times down the floor, not get a shot off is frustrating. We need to continue to work hard and get better and finish games.”
The Roadrunners (1-8) travel to UC Riverside Saturday for a 7 p.m. start. The Roadrunners return home Dec. 19 for a 1 p.m. matchup against Cal Poly. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com.
