Box Score CORVALLIS, Ore.—No. 7 Oregon State (8-0) defeated CSU Bakersfield 75-51 Tuesday morning in the Beavers' Beyond the Classroom game. The teams competed in front of 7,824 fans, the largest crowd in which the Roadrunners have played in front of.
Despite only making three of 18 field goal attempts in the first quarter, the 'Runners only trailed by five, 15-10 to the Beavers. Oregon State opened the second quarter on a 14-2 run to break the game open. The 'Runners were 3-for-12 from the field in the second as the Roadrunners trailed 37-22 at halftime.
The Beavers sank the first six field goal attempts (including three three-pointers) of the third quarter to extend the lead to 54-26 at the media timeout. Oregon State would go 9-of-14 from the field during the third (64.3%) to lead 60-32 at the end of the period.
"We struggled in the second and third quarters," said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. "We wanted to meet certain shooting goals and we failed to do so."
Dajy Vines scored eight consecutive points for the 'Runners in the fourth quarter to cut the Oregon State lead to 65-45 with just over four minutes to play. 20 would be as close as CSUB would get as the Beavers earned the 24-point victory.
Oregon State shot 51.6% from the field (32-of-62), compared to 27.9% (17-of-61) for CSUB. Oregon State outrebounded the Roadrunners 45-32. The Roadrunners forced 16 turnovers which were turned into 20 points. CSUB held a 20-2 free throw attempt advantage over the Beavers, making 17. Jamie Weisner was the top scoring Oregon State player with 14. Ruth Hamblin posted 12 while Deven Hunter had 11.
Batabe Zempare led CSUB with 14 points and eight rebounds. Alyssa Shannon extended her consecutive free throw streak to 19 as she was 8-of-8 from the charity stripe. Shannon scored 12 points and dished out six assists. Vines, in her second start back from the second major knee injury of her career, ended the day with 12 points.
"The one thing we were able to do was get to free throw line and make those attempts," McCall said.
The Roadrunners (1-10) return home Saturday for a 1 p.m. matchup against Cal Poly (6-3). Saturday's game is part of a doubleheader with the CSUB men who take on Menlo at 4 p.m. Tickets are available at Vallitix.com.
