FRESNO, Calif—With the starters at the Mountaineer Duals in Boone, N.C. Saturday, the CSU Bakersfield wrestling team sent a limited squad to the Fresno City College Bill Musick Open Saturday.
For the second week in a row, Sean Nickell, wrestling unattached at 125 pounds, took home an individual title. Nickell was 4-0 during the tournament, defeating Julian Gaytan of Fresno City College 5-4 in the finals. He is now 9-0 as a redshirt this season.
Also winning for the second consecutive week was Lorenzo De La Riva. A true freshman who is redshirting this season, De La Riva was 4-0 during the meet, winning by injury default over Aaron Negrette of Cerritos College in the 157-pound finals. De La Riva is 8-0 this season.
Russell Rohfling, a 2015-16 freshman redshirt for the Roadrunners, was the 141-pound champion. He went 4-0, defeating teammate Tyler Lawrence, a redshirt freshman, 9-0 in the finals. Lawrence won his three previous matches by a 27-6 count to get to the finals.
Noah Blakely-Beanes, who is redshirting as a true freshman this season, finished second at 133 pounds. He went 3-1, losing to Jonas Gaytan of Fresno City College in the finals, 8-2.
True freshman redshirt Mark Penyacsek took third place at 184 pounds.
The Roadrunners have a busy week ahead. On Saturday, CSUB will take part in “Take it Outside II” at California Baptist. The outdoor meet is set for 12 p.m. in Riverside. CSU Bakersfield will then travel to Fresno's Selland Arena where CSUB hosts the fifth Roadrunner Open. The tournament begins at 10 a.m. CSUB hosts No. 1 Penn State Nov. 20 in the Icardo Center.
