Gaels Too Much For CSUB In Road Loss

Box Score

MORAGA, Calif.- A slow offensive start plagued the CSUB Roadrunners on Sunday evening as the 'Runners never led and ran into a hot-shooting Gaels team in a 94-59 loss at Saint Mary's.

The 35-point loss was the worse for CSUB since falling 97-55 at Utah Valley in March of 2014. The 95 points allowed were the most for the Roadrunners since their season opening 100-99 four-overtime loss to High Point in Hawai'i last season.

The Roadrunners managed just 26% shooting in the first half while the Gaels continued their home dominance with a 59% (16-27) effort to build a 40-20 halftime lead. Jock Landale took advantage of several open-looks to lead the Gaels with nine first-half points in just 11 minutes of play.

“We have to give them credit, they got on top of us early and we missed a lot of easy shots,” said CSUB head coach Rod Barnes. “When you're on the road you can't do that against a very good offensive team.”

The second half saw much better shooting for CSUB who recovered from a 26-point deficit early to pull within 20 points, but Saint Mary's also continued to shoot the ball well extending their lead to as many as 38 points. The Roadrunners were 15-of-29 (51%) from the field and 6-of-10 (60%) from three-point range but the Gaels matched those totals with a 19-of-30 (63%) from the field and a 6-of-10 from three-point range as well.

“They [Saint Mary's] did what they needed to do, they came out and just really gave us an old-fashioned whoopin',” Barnes said. “We need to go back and lick our wounds and get ready for the next game.”

CSUB was led by Damiyne Durham who scored 14 points on 5-of-15 from the field and 2-of-8 from three-point range. Dedrick Basile added 10 points on 4-of-11 from the field. The Roadrunners were 23-of-60 from the field for 38% and 7-of-18 from three-point range. They struggled from the free throw line converting just 6-of-19 attempts.

Saint Mary's had five players in double figures led by Emmett Naar who scored 17 points on 6-of-10 from the field. Naar added seven assists for the Gaels. He and Joe Rahon combined for 15 of the Gaels' 22 assists on the night. Saint Mary's converted 35-of-57 shots from the field (61%) and 11-of-22 from three-point range in the win.

CSUB will conclude their three-game road trip Wednesday night as they travel to Idaho for their second meeting in as many weeks with the Vandals. CSUB won the first game in Bakersfield 68-45 on November 17. Tip off is scheduled for 8 P.M.
