'Runners Never Trail in Opening Night Win

Box Score

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.- The CSUB Roadrunners converted on nearly 60-percent of their attempts from the field as four players scored in double figures in a 93-69 opening-night rout of visiting San Diego Christian.

The Roadrunners, officially unveiling their talented 2015-16 roster, never trailed and opened the contest on a 12-0 run thanks to five early turnovers by the Hawks. Bakersfield held SDC without a field goal for the first 9:21 of the game while building a 27-10 lead in the process. The Roadrunners would lead 28-59 at the half sparked by 17 first-half points form Kevin Mays who was a perfect 8-of-8 from the field.

“I told our team we just have to continue to stay hungry and stay humble,” said head coach Rod Barnes. “I think we have a team that can score but we have to continue to get better because in a couple weeks teams are going to be much better and we are going to be on the road so we really have to try to iron out some things;  but I though tonight was a good night for us.”

The 'Runners had four players in double figures led by redshirt freshman Damiyne Durham who scored 25 points on 9-of-16 shooting and 4-of-10 from three-point range in 18 minutes of play. Senior center Aly Ahmed was a force early as he scored 18 points for the Roadrunners on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with six rebounds. Mays added 17 while junior guard Dedrick Basile added 14 points on 6-of-14 from the field and 2-of-4 from three-point range. Basile and Brent Wrapp each had eight assists for the Roadrunners who recorded 29 assists as a team to just 11 turnovers.

CSUB led by as many as 50 in the game before SDC scored five three pointers in the final five minutes, four of which came from Trevor English who led the Hawks with 19 points on 5-of-8 from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point range.

The victory was the first season-opening win for the 'Runners under Barnes and the first for the program since the 2005-06 season when CSUB defeated Cal State East Bay 114-83.

The Roadrunners continue their season-opening home stand Tuesday night host Idaho at the Icardo Center. The Vandals opened their season with a 74-54 win at San Jose State on Saturday night.

Barnes says Idaho will be an early-season challenge for the 'Runners.

“They've got a lot of depth, they've got a lot of people coming back, they're well coached so we really have to do a great job of preparing for them,” Barnes said. “We have to get better and play the way we are playing.”

Tuesday night's game will also feature a special halftime championship ring presentation for the 2015 CSUB baseball team and a postgame lip sync competition hosted by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. Tickets are available by calling 654-BLUE or online at Vallitix.com. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 P.M., that game can also be heard on Newstalk 1180 and 96.1 FM KERN with live video available via the Roadrunner Sports Network.
