Box Score Bakersfield, Calif.-- The CSU Bakersfield women's soccer team improved on its result against WAC-leading Seattle U from a week ago, but the Redhawks earned a 2-0 victory on Friday night at the Main Soccer Field.
The Roadrunners faced the Redhawks in Seattle just seven days ago and fell by a score of 3-0. Despite taking another loss on Friday, Gary Curneen, Head Coach of the 'Runners, was able to see his team moving in the right direction: “We're still making progress. I know it might look as if we're on a bit of a dive at the minute, but, I think this is our greatest period of growth. Even though we didn't get the result tonight, if we're going to become the program that we want to become, we have to learn to deal with this.”
The Redhawks (11-2-3, 6-0-2 WAC) came into the week ranked in the Top 70 in NCAA Division I RPI. The 'Runner defense held strong through the majority of the first half, but Seattle U found the back of the net in the 37th minute. Julia Moravec scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season to put her squad up 1-0.
CSUB pushed back and created a few chances of its own in both halves. Although the 'Runners only took four shots in the match, all four were on target and were not easy saves for Seattle U's Brianna Smallidge.
Seattle earned a second goal at 68:00 when Hunter Mar received Summer Mason's ball deep in the box. Mar buried the ball to give the Redhawks a 2-0 lead. The 'Runners continued to pressure and a controversial offsides call prevented a one-on-one situation with CSUB's Maja Green and Smallidge.
The 'Runners (5-10-2, 3-4-1 WAC) will be back in action on Sunday to close out their regular-season home schedule against the Wolverines of Utah Valley. Sunday's match is set for an 11 a.m. start and is Senior Day for the four 'Runner seniors.
