Box Score BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—In a rematch of the 2014 Western Athletic Conference Tournament finals, CSU Bakersfield and UNLV played to a 1-1 tie in conference men's soccer action Sunday night.
The Roadrunners were outshot 8-1 in the first half, but the lone CSUB attempt was turned into Julian Zamora's fifth goal of the season in the 33rd minute. Zamora headed in Dante Niño cross from seven yards out. The Rebels tied the score in the 65th minute when Danny Musovski stole the ball from a Roadrunner defender, took three dribbles, and shot the ball past CSUB goalie Oscar Gloveus from 22 yards out.
“We did a great job of getting up 1-0 because it was against the run of play,” said CSUB head coach Richie Grant. I thought UNLV played well in the first half and so they probably were worth their goal.”
Gloveus made three saves in the final 20 minutes of regulation while his counterpart, Richard Garness, also made three saves, sending the match into overtime. Garness turned away a Christian Duarte header 45 seconds into the first overtime in what proved to be the only shot on goal by either team. CSUB had several other chances that resulted in shot attempts, but the match remained knotted up.
The match advanced to the second overtime where Gloveus stopped a Musovski attempt 51 seconds into the fourth period. A Zamora attempt appeared to be on its way to becoming the game winner, but a Rebel defender knocked the ball away. After a pair of corner kicks, UNLV's Jason Khamvongsa put a wide attempt on goal.
The third Rebels' corner kick of the second overtime occurred in the 105th minute. After the ball was knocked out of bounds, Grant was issued a yellow card by head referee Albert Montavlo for arguing a call. The arguing continued which saw Grant being issued a second yellow card. This resulted in a Grant red card and an ejection with 3:23 to play.
UNLV threatened in the final minute of play. With 57 seconds, UNLV was awarded a corner kick. 31 seconds later, Khamvongsa's shot was blocked by the CSUB defense. The ball went over the goal line, giving the Rebels their eighth corner kick of the match with 20 seconds to go. Jordan Chavez's shot went wide just before the buzzer, resulting in both teams earning a point in the WAC standings.
UNLV (8-3-1, 2-1-1 WAC) outshot CSUB 20-12, 8-6 on goal. Gloveus made seven saves while Garness had four.
“I thought we were tremendous in the extra time,” Grant said. “We kept our discipline and we had a couple of chances. It was the typical difficult Sunday game, it was a grind, and it was important to come away with a point from this game. Oscar made some big saves; it was a good weekend for us.”
CSUB (4-3-3, 1-1-1 WAC) travels to Seattle U for a Friday doubleheader with the Roadrunner women's team against the Redhawks. The women's match begins at 5 p.m. with the men's match getting underway at 7:30 p.m.
